Why we rated Nature Made our #3

If you’re watching your wallet, Nature Made prenatal vitamins are a great value. Nature Made® Prenatal Multi + DHA Softgels are formulated with key vitamins and minerals for nutritional support during pregnancy and DHA which may help support fetal brain and eye development. With clinically proven absorption of folic acid and iron, this Prenatal provides a full essential nutrient profile including all eight B vitamins, and vitamins A, C, D, E and K, Prenatal Multi + DHA to support the development of baby’s brain, nervous system, bones and eyes.
In our testing, we loved the ease of use for taking the 1 a day softgel, which was very easy to swallow. It comes with a 90-day supply since you only have to take1 softgel daily. This brand is also USP VERIFIED, which means it has been independently tested for quality and purity. Read on to see why we rated Nature Made #4 on our list.
“What’s in Nature Made Prenatal?”
The whole point of prenatals is to obtain optimal amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support a healthy conception, baby’s development, and support for mom. Nature Made prenatals boast they have the full amount of folic acid and iron. This is pretty standard for your average prenatal, but the prices are cheaper than most other companies’ prenatals, giving you more value for each pill. Personally, I don’t mind spending a little bit more for my prenatals, but if cost is of concern, Nature Made’s value is great.
One of the biggest problems that we have with Nature Made’s is that it does not contain choline. The most recent recommendations that came out in 2021 recommend pregnant women get at least 450mg of choline daily because it is critical for baby’s brain development. More than 92% of women are deficient in choline and it is difficult to get from diet alone. If you take Nature Made, we recommend you supplement with additional choline.
This formula is gluten free, but it does contain soy, one of the most prolific allergens in the food world. As we learn more about soy, we are finding that it has many negative effects on the body. One of the most compelling reasons to avoid soy is that it contains plant estrogens that closely mimic the body’s natural estrogen hormones. This can cause gynecomastia and erectile dysfunction in males and cases as severe as breast cancer in women.
“How Does Nature Made Taste?”
I think all mamas can agree that there are only so many times one can choke down their prenatal vitamins during pregnancy, especially during the early days. The benefit of Nature Made is that it is one softgel per day. The softgel is on the larger side, but if taking one is all you can muster, then this one is for you.
We also found that it does have a pretty strong fish smell and taste due to the DHA in the formula. We generally don’t recommend DHA to be part of a prenatal because when DHA is mixed with other ingredients, it is not shelf stable – meaning it cannot be stored on the shelf for very long.
The Bottom Line
Nature Made has been a best-seller for decades and for good reason. It does contain the basic level ingredients (except missing the critical ingredient Choline!), but the value is unbeatable and is a great prenatal for if you are on a budget – and the one pill a day is a strong proposition if you are struggling to keep your prenatals down.
